Homework #1

When creating things like company logos or advertisements it is important to choose something that is simple and eye-catching while at the same time not being too distracting. When a company launches a logo the original design is usually the best one because it fits all of those criteria. When the company tries to change the design hoping to get people talking about the company, sometimes it doesn’t go as planned. The article referenced two companies who did not succeed in revamping their logos into something better and ended up back with their original idea. When I read this article I immediately thought about how certain companies are changing their logos. They aren’t usually big changes that these logos are making, its usually just that they take the words out of the logos. For example, Starbucks had a logo that consisted of the picture o the woman with the words Starbucks Coffee around it. First Day Questions

My previous computer experience is limited. I have used a PC up until this past summer when I bought a MAC computer. I have a basic understanding of Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Throughout this class I hope to become comfortable with creating new things through photoshop which I have never used before. When I hear visual studies I think about things that you create with the intention of having other people look at it. For example, paintings or sculptures that stand in a museum or a website that you visit everyday like facebook or twitter. These were websites designed to have people view them everyday. On the computer, using software like photoshop we have the capability of creating pictures that have not been seen before.  I have never used Photoshop or Illustrator before. Homework #7

I think that changing the logos on company merchandise to lower the economic impact is great idea. It also makes a lot more sense to me of why companies started to change their logo, not drastically but enough that you took notice. It is amazing to me that for Starbucks, just thinning out the lines and using less color that it changed the logo so much and saved them so much ink. I didn't know that ink cost that much money and we used that much ink per project. It is really going to make me think differently about the things that I print from now on.
